Earth’s Ongoing Transformation

The Ocean Floors And The Condition That The Tectonic Plates Surround Are Not Static. They Move In A Fascinating Cycle That Has Dramatically Changed The Face Of The Earth Over Millennia. It Is A Good Reminder Of An Idea So Important To Mindfulness: Impermanence That Is That Everything Is Changing, In Our Minds, Our Bodies, And The World Around Us. The Earth Is A Planet Made Up Of Four Layers. The Inner Two Are So Deep Within The Earth That They Have Never Been Seen. The Third Is The Mantle, A Mixture Of Silicates And Other Minerals, Upon Which The Fourth Layer Floats: The Solid Earth's Crust. But The Picture Is A Little More Complicated Than A Simple Four-Layered Onion Skin.

The Outer Two Layers Have Been Interacting In A Delicate Cycle For Billions Of Years, Molten Parts Of The Mantle Solidifying Into A New Crust, As Older Crust Melts Back Into Mantle. The Density And Thickness Of The Earth's Crust Varies, With The Ocean Crust Being The Heaviest, But Also The Thinnest, 5-10 Kilometers, Whereas The Crust Of Mountains On The Continents Are Lighter But Thicker, Ranging From 30-45 Kilometers. That Means That The Oceanic Crust Sinks More Deeply Into The Mantle And Becomes Covered In Water, Whereas The Continental Crust Floats More Buoyantly. The Earth's Crust Is Not All Connected, But Rather Consists Of Separate Plates, 15 Pieces Actually, Named For The Ocean Or The Land Form Above Them. And They Can Move. Although It Is Unclear Exactly Why And How, It Is In A Cycle Of Sorts.

Unlike Most Cycles, Though This One Takes Place Over Eons, So We Don't Notice It Unless Something Perceivable Reminds Us Of It. For Instance Deep In The Ocean, When Two Plates Separate, Magma, The Molten Rock In The Mantle Below The Crust, Can Push Up Through A Separation. As It Oozes Out And Hits The Cold Water, It Solidifies, Enlarging The Oceanic Crust, But At The Same Time Pushing The Two Oceanic Plates Apart And Into Plates That Have Land Masses, Like The Eurasian And North American Plates. That Can Result In Two Plates Sliding Along Each Other Or Colliding Directly With Another Plate, And The Two Crust Masses Moving Upwards Over Millennia, Forming Jagged Mountains, Like With The Himalayas. In Still Other Places, The Denser Oceanic Crust Dives Below The Continental Crust, An Event Called Subduction.

With The Frictional Heat Generated, Rock Is Melted And Water Vapors Are Released, Making Volcanoes And Geysers Erupt. Because The Amount Of Earth's Crust Is In Flux, Whenever Crust Is Created In One Place, Crust Is Inevitably Disassembled Somewhere Else, Usually By Subduction, Diving Below The Continental Crust And Becoming Mantle Again. It Is A Cycle That Continues Adding And Subtracting, Yet Leading To Movement And Change Of The Continents Over The Earth's Life. Although Nearly Imperceptible, That Change Has Been Happening For Billions Of Years And Will Continue On For Billions More. Like So Many Things In Our Life, Even Though It May Be Hard To See, Change Is Ever-Occurring.

We Don't Have To Force Change. Change Will Happen Naturally When We Creare A Framework Of Awareness.
